The importance of a good reputation

A good name is more desirable than great riches; to be esteemed is better than silver or gold.

Proverbs 22:1

A man in the Army of Alexander the Great who was also named Alexander was one day accused of cowardly actions. He was brought before Alexander, the great military conqueror, who asked what his name was. He replied softly, “Alexander.”

“I can’t hear you,” the ruler stated.

The man again said, a little louder, “Alexander.”

The process was repeated one more time, after which a very flustered Alexander the Great sternly commanded him, “Either change your name or change your conduct!”

When Scripture tells us about the importance of a good name, it’s not talking about a name that’s creative or even meaningful. It really carries the idea of maintaining a good reputation, so that when others hear your name, they associate it with things that are good, honorable, and upright.

Maybe your reputation at some point has taken a hit because of something that may or may not have been your fault. Regardless, it’s never too late to begin making a good name for yourself. Conduct yourself in such a way that your good name precedes you. When you do, you’ll be a much more effective witness for Christ!
