How to spiritually re-calibrate

Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize.— 1 Corinthians 9:24

The apostle Paul was always one to use sports analogies when describing spiritual realities. That’s because many of the struggles athletes face in the heat of competition are a lot like the challenges we face in our spiritual lives.

In football, for example, when a team losing by a few points is getting close to the goal line of their opponent late in the game, the quarterback will often call a time-out and go to the sideline. There, he can hear from his coaches who give him guidance and help him make the calls that will lead to the most success.

Many times in our lives, we need to call spiritual “time-outs” and go to the sideline. Whether we’re facing a big decision, are overwhelmed, or simply feel like we need to re-calibrate ourselves, getting away and connecting with God’s guidance is invaluable.

Like sports, life is a struggle. But if we stay connected to our coach – God – then we’ll get the guidance we need to make the calls that lead us to the prize God has in store for us!
