“Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come. But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what time of night the thief was coming he would have kept watch and would not have let his house be broken into. So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.”— Matthew 24:42-44
On May 19, 1780, the skies over Hartford, Connecticut, quickly turned from blue to gray. By mid-afternoon, they had blackened over so densely that, in that religious age, men fell on their knees and begged a final blessing before the end came.
The Connecticut House of Representatives was in session. And as some men fell down while others clamored for an immediate adjournment, the Speaker of the House came to his feet and said these words: “The Day of Judgment is either approaching or it is not. If it is not, there is no cause for adjournment. If it is, I choose to be found doing my duty. I wish, therefore, that candles may be brought.”
It seems like every year someone predicts the world will end and Jesus Christ will return. And yet every year up to now has gone by with no incident. But for those of us who hold fast to our faith, we still look forward to the day when our Lord returns and all things are made new.
But until that day comes, we must be about our work for the Kingdom because until Christ returns, our work is not yet complete. So regardless of when Christ is set to return, live your life to bring Him glory!
