What’s in a name?

“And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son.” – John 14:13

There’s a funny little scene in Disney’s movie, The Lion King, in which the young lion prince, Simba, has been captured by a band of hyenas.

At first the hyenas are unaware who they’ve cornered. But once they discover that the little cub in their clutches is actually the son of the mighty king, Mufasa, they’re overcome with awe. The scene goes like this:

First Hyena: “Mufasa, now that’s power.”
Second Hyena: “Tell me about it. I just hear that name and I shudder.”
First Hyena: “Mufasa!”
Second Hyena: (Shivering) “Ooooh… Do it again.”
Second Hyena: “Mufasa, Mufasa, Mufasa!”
First Hyena: “Ooooh…. (Building up hysterical laughter) It tingles me!”

Names carry the weight of who they represent, and there is no greater name in heaven or earth than the name of Jesus. Christ has promised you that all your needs, whether great or small, are met in His name.

Do you need comfort today? Ask for it in Jesus’ name. Do you need healing? Ask in His name. Are you searching for answers to a difficult situation? Pray for guidance in Jesus’ name.

His name is not a magic word that conjures up whatever we desire. But as you trust in Him for all you need, His name becomes the gateway of God’s promises in your life.

So for God’s glory and your greatest good, lay hold of the privilege that’s yours as a child of the King – take your needs before our gracious God in the powerful name of Jesus!
