The power of expressing thanks

I thank God, whom I serve, as my ancestors did, with a clear conscience, as night and day I constantly remember you in my prayers.

2 Timothy 1:3

In his autobiography, Breaking Barriers, syndicated columnist Carl Rowan tells about a teacher, Miss Thompson, who greatly influenced his life. One day during class, she shared a quote from the world-renowned architect Daniel Burnham that resonated with Rowan:

“Make no little plans; they have no magic to stir men’s blood and probably themselves will not be realized. Make big plans, aim high in hope and work. Remember that our sons and grandsons are going to do things that would stagger us.”

More than 30 years later, Rowan gave a speech in which he talked about how his life was altered when Frances Thompson shared that quote with him. It was then that he really learned to believe in himself. A newspaper printed the story, and someone mailed the clipping to the now elderly teacher.

She wrote Rowan: “For years, I endured my brother’s arguments that I had wasted my life…. When I read that you gave me credit for helping to launch a marvelous career, I put the clipping in front of my brother. After he’d read it, I said, ‘You see, I didn’t really waste my life, did I?’”

Thankfulness expressed is a powerful thing. So as you reflect today, share with others about the difference they’ve made in your life. It might just be exactly what they need to hear!

Prayer Challenge
