A God-shaped hole

Only fools say in their hearts, “There is no God.” — Psalm 14:1

Years ago, Joseph Stalin’s daughter, Svetlana Alliluyeva, defected from Russia to flee communism. This was a huge development in the Cold War – and many on both sides were startled. Upon meeting reporters in New York, she told them…

“I found it impossible to exist without God in one’s heart. I came to that conclusion myself, without anybody’s help or preaching. That was a great change because since that moment the main dogmas of communism lost their significance for me. I have come here to seek the self-expression that has been denied me for so long in Russia.”

Imagine the struggle of leaving your entire family to make a life in a new nation. But Svetlana knew something that’s true of all people – each of us have what Pascal called a “God-shaped vacuum” within us.

No matter how loudly atheists proclaim God doesn’t exist, every single man, woman, and child in the world has an innate feeling He’s real. That’s because, within us, there is a God-shaped hole nothing else can fill.

Don’t be discouraged by those who deny God’s existence. Be encouraged that He has written His existence into every heart!
