The key to maintaining a Kingdom focus

Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. — Colossians 3:1-2

A story is told of Yogi Berra, the well known catcher for the New York Yankees, and Hank Aaron, who at that time was the chief power hitter for the Milwaukee Braves. The teams were playing in the World Series, and as usual, Yogi was keeping up his ceaseless chatter, intended to distract the Milwaukee batters.

As Aaron came to the plate, Yogi tried to razz him by saying, “Henry you’re holding the bat wrong. You’re supposed to hold it so you can read the trademark.” Aaron didn’t say anything but when the next pitch came, he hit it into the left-field bleachers. After rounding the bases and crossing home plate, Aaron looked at Yogi Berra and said, “Yogi, I didn’t come up here to read.”

Quite often, the enemy loves to try to take our focus off the task at hand and make us concentrate on insignificant things. Whether it’s materialism, a sin struggle, or any other kind of distraction, Satan’s goal is to keep our minds and hands busy doing other things besides honoring God.

But just like Hank Aaron, we have to remember why we’re really here. We can’t let the distractions of life keep us from making an impact for God’s Kingdom. So stay focused, keeping your eyes on what’s really important so that one day, you’ll cross life’s home plate knowing you stayed focused on God’s task for you!
